October 15, 2012

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Florida, will be the keynote speaker at BBVA Compass Bowl's Monday Morning Quarterback Club Team Luncheon, Bowl officials announced Monday.

The Monday Morning Quarterback Club Team Luncheon, presented by Sheraton Birmingham, is a marquee event during bowl week in January. It will be held at noon CT on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at the Sheraton Birmingham Ballroom.

Meadows made the Wuerffel announcement as he presented the Monday Morning Quarterback Club with a $25,000 donation for the Club’s charitable foundation. With this donation, the Bowl has contributed $175,000 since 2006 to the Crippled Children’s Foundation which provides direct financial support to twenty-one charities providing vital medical services to children.

The BBVA Compass Bowl will kick off at noon on Saturday, Jan. 5, and will be televised on ESPN. The contest will feature a team from the BIG EAST Conference against a team from the Southeastern Conference.

Over the past six years, the BBVA Compass Bowl has generated $58.7 million in economic impact for Birmingham. Additionally, in cooperation with their sponsors and conference partners, the Bowl has donated thousands of tickets to local charitable groups and military families.

Danny Wuerffel set 17 Florida records and earned All-America honors in 1995 and 1996. As a senior, he was tabbed the winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. He was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the 1997 NFL Draft and played one season each with the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins. He also played with the NFL’s European League, winning the World Bowl Championship and was chosen the league’s MVP by the European media.

In 2004, Wuerffel retired from professional football to work full-time in New Orleans’ 9th Ward with Desire Street Ministries, which was started to revitalize America’s most impoverished neighborhoods.
