BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Monday Morning Quarterback Club Team Dinner presented by the Sheraton Birmingham will be held at the Sheraton Birmingham Ballroom on Tuesday, December 19 at 6:30 p.m. Former University of Texas head coach, who led the Longhorns to a national championship in 2005, and current ESPN college football analyst Mack Brown will be keynote speaker, and former University of Alabama and NFL great Cornelius Bennett will be honored as the 2017 Golden Flake Legend of Birmingham.
Texas Tech and University of South Florida football teams will attend the dinner, and there will be a Q&A with the head coaches. Individual tickets are available for $75, and tables are available for $750. Mack Brown was head coach of the University of Texas from 1998-2013, where he led the Longhorns to a national championship in 2005, led the team to compete in the national championship title game in 2009 and won two Big 12 Championships (2005, 2009). He joined ESPN in 2014 as a college football studio analyst on College Football Countdown and contributes to studio coverage on ABC during halftime and postgame shows during the college football season. Brown was also the head coach at the University of North Carolina (1988-97), Tulane University (1985-87) and Appalachian State University (1983). He previously held assistant coaching positions at Oklahoma, LSU, Iowa State and Memphis State.
Brown compiled a 244-122-1 overall record as a collegiate head coach and won the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award (2005), Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award (2008) and was a two-time Big 12 Coach of the Year (2005, 2009). He was named ACC Coach of the Year in 1996. He has been inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, the Holiday Bowl Hall of Fame and the Longhorn Hall of Honor. He will be inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame this year and is on the ballot for the 2018 National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.
The Birmingham Bowl and Golden Flake annually recognize current or former Birmingham residents who distinguished themselves throughout their athletic career as the Golden Flake Legend of Birmingham. Former honorees include Pat Sullivan (2006), Johnny Musso (2007), Mike Kolen (2008), Bobby Humphrey (2009), Bobby Bowden (2010), Al Del Greco (2011), Jack Crowe (2012), Tony Nathan (2013), Mike Fuller (2014), Major Ogilvie (2015) and Joe Cribbs (2016).
The 2017 Golden Flake Legend, Cornelius Bennett, played for the University of Alabama from 1983–1986 and was a first selection on the College Football All-America Team three times (1984–1986). He is one of only two Alabama players to be named to three All-America teams. In his four seasons at the University of Alabama, Bennett recorded 287 tackles, 21½ sacks, and 3 fumble recoveries. In 2005, Bennett was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.
Bennett played for the Buffalo Bills from 1987 to 1995, Atlanta Falcons from 1996 to 1998, and the Indianapolis Colts from 1999 to 2000. He was the second pick of the 1987 NFL Draft. At that time, Bennett was Alabama’s highest draft selection since quarterback Joe Namath went 12th overall in 1965 and remains the highest selected Crimson Tide defender ever.
He played in five Super Bowls (four with Buffalo and one with Atlanta). In his 14 NFL seasons, he played in five Super Bowls and recorded 71½ sacks, 7 interceptions, 112 return yards, 31 forced fumbles, 27 fumble recoveries, 78 fumble return yards, and three touchdowns (one interception, one fumble return, and one blocked field goal return). Bennett was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
The 2017 Birmingham Bowl will feature the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the South Florida Bulls on December 23 at 11 a.m. at historic Legion Field, before a nationally televised audience on ESPN.
